Do What's Right
Is it ever ok to disobey your authority? Check out 1 Samuel 22:11-17. #iDevo #YFA #LivingLeadership
The king was pretty mad but David had not done anything against the king. Jonathan knew it, the priests and Ahimelech knew it, and Saul’s men and body guards knew it. Now think about this, the most loyal people in Saul’s circle. His family in his son, Jonathan, and daughter, Micah, had to disobey and oppose his orders. As well as his body guards, the men who were willing to lay down their lives to protect the king opposed his orders and refused to obey him. So how is it Saul who lost his kingship for only obeying 99% of God’s command was considered in rebellion for his 1% disobedience (1 Samuel 15:1-23) but Jonathan, Micah, and the body guards were not in rebellion for their disobedience?
It comes down to principle and God’s moral law. In the case of David he was an innocent man and for the body guards to put him to death would have been the equivalent of murder. That was a command from God they could not disobey and God’s command to not kill was greater than the king’s to put David to death just because he was more popular than Saul. In the same way there are times when we can respectfully not follow the directions or orders of our authority like when it would cause us to break the law or violate God’ law. Now this does not mean we get to disobey or not follow just because we disagree or have a difference of opinion in how something should be done, that is still disobedience and rebellion. So the next time you disagree with a leader, check first to see if it is a matter of preference or something else. Because one day we will have to give an account when we stand before God and we need to make sure that if we do disagree that we are obeying a higher law than what our leader is trying to get us to do.
