The Holiness of God: "Set-Apart-Ness"
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” -Isaiah 55:8-9
Do you know the definition of holiness? It means “set apart.” God is holy because he is set apart from us, meaning simply that he is God and we are not. That’s what the verses above are talking about. God’s thoughts and ways are better than our thoughts and ways. They’re set apart because God is God.
I heard this saying from a teacher of mine once: “All I know is that there is a God, and I am not him.” Isn’t that the beginning of all of our worship? When we truly realize that God is holy, set high above us, we can’t help but worship.
As you spend time with God today, think about his “set-apart-ness.” How does this affect your view of yourself? Of God?
