What it Means to be a Disciple: The Few, the Proud, the Disciples!

Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Most people have heard the phrase, “The Few, the Proud, the Marines!” The Marine Corps uses it as a slogan to emphasize the elite nature of what it is to be a Marine. You see the Marines are not for everyone, in my time serving in the military you learned that it took a special breed of men and women to wear the uniform of a United States Marine. For most Marines, the other branches of service were not an option and it was a badge of honor to complete a boot camp much harder than any other service’s boot camp. From the lowliest grunt to the Commandant of the Marine Corps they inspire people to be greater, instill fear in our enemies, and impact the lives of those around them.

In the same way as believers, we too are called to be something more. We have a choice to be someone who is called simply a Christian because we attend a church or youth group and just be part of the crowd. Or we can be a disciple of Christ and change the world. You see Jesus had followers who were disciples and then those who were just part of the crowd. The ones who were part of the crowd had very little impact in fact. On the other hand the disciples changed the world and like a United States Marine we too can be a disciple and:

1. Inspire the people around us to be greater not because of anything we can do but because of the God who is in us working through us.

2. Instill fear in the enemy, satan is afraid of disciples because he knows they can change the world, he is not afraid of Christians that are just part of the crowd doing nothing and simply sitting on their pews.

3. Impact the lives of those around us because we are called to be a shining light in the darkness of this lost and hurting world.

The question is, are you ready to be a disciple?
