Are you a big talker? Are you quick to answer a question without even realizing what you are saying? Ever made harsh comments during an argument? The Bible warns us that we better be careful! We must remember . . . WORDS are powerful! What we say can be encouraging and uplifting or it can be very destructive and damaging.

The book of Proverbs has much to say about our speech and what comes out of our mouths. Verse 20 says “There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking” (NLT). When we are hasty and impulsive with our words, we usually say things that we later regret. Always running our mouths can lead to meaningless idle talk! Even though we may think we are right in what we are saying, we may not actually know what we are talking about! Also, rash words spoken out of anger can be very hurtful.

There are times when it is best to just keep quiet! The Bible tells us in James 1:19 that we are to be quick to listen and slow to speak! And for other times that we do need to respond, we should choose our words wisely. We need to make sure that what we are saying is accurate, necessary, and meaningful! We should encourage one another and build each other up.

We can all be guilty of saying things that we wish we would have said differently or maybe even not said at all. There is wisdom in slowing down and taking a moment to think about what you are going to say. Colossians 4: 6 tells us “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone” (NLT). Ask God to help you from this point on to THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!
