God and Sexuality - Three Stances: Sex is Gross
“Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” -1 Corinthians 7:5
If you've been tracking with us this week, you know we're taking a look at three common views of sex - Sex is God, Sex is Gross, and Sex is a Gift. Yesterday we talked about Sex as God. If you missed out on that one, scroll down on the iDevo Blog page and read it first.
On the contrary to sex being idolized, some people believe that sex is gross. I see this view being common with many young men and women in the Church, especially here in the “Bible Belt” of the United States. This probably stems from an attempt by well-meaning parents trying to discourage their children from having sex before marriage. The biggest problem with this belief, though, is that when these young men and women do marry, there is still an underlying belief that sex is gross or bad in some way, and so sexuality is discouraged. If you are married, sexuality is certainly not something that should be discouraged!
1 Corinthians 7:5 says, “Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.” If you believe that sex is gross, think about where that belief comes from. It is not biblical. There are many places in Scripture that encourage sexual intimacy between husband and wife. In fact, the whole book of Song of Solomon is quite sexual (as well as romantic and intimate!). Read it for yourself if you don't believe me. I guarantee you'll giggle by the time you get to chapter 4, verse 5.
Stay with us! Tomorrow, we'll talk about the third common view of sex - Sex is a Gift.
