The Life of Moses: God's Concern for His Name
“For this time I will send all my plagues on you yourself, and on your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. For by now I could have struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth. But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” -Exodus 9:14-16
God is very firm when it comes to his name. His name itself is holy, so when people challenge him and curse his name, he doesn’t mess around. He also does not hesitate to let everyone know just how great his name is. For example, all of the plagues in Exodus that we are reading about have one main purpose that is stated over and over and over again: God is showing his power and proclaiming his great name.
Concern for God’s name is all over the bible. If you’re interested in reading more, you should definitely check out these verses: Exodus 20:7; Ezekiel 39:7; Malachi 1:6-14; Philippians 2:9-11; Acts 4:12; Isaiah 42:8; Ezekiel 36:23.
