Awesome!

6 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”

4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

Did you catch the reaction Isaiah had when he realized that he was in the presence of God? He was terrified! He realized the Lord’s holiness and his own lack of holiness. He was in awe before God, thinking that he would surely die because of the Lord’s holiness.

Have we lost our awe in worship? When you go to church and worship God, are you struck by his presence like this? Are you aware of how far you fall short? Don’t make worship something that you do just because that’s what good people do. Find yourself in awe of God. He is so much holier than us that we should rightly die in his presence, but he chose to give us purity of heart and salvation from death through his son Jesus Christ.

Next time you dedicate time to active worship, focus on who God is, who you are, and what Jesus has done. Allow yourself to be in awe of him. Of whom else could we possibly be in awe?
