Heaven and Hell: The Parable of the Mustard Seed
“He put another parable before them, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’ ” -Matthew 13:31-32
Here we have another parable where Jesus explains a certain aspect of the Kingdom of Heaven. What does mustard have to do with heaven, though?
Jesus seems to be saying that even though the kingdom begins small, it grows bigger than all other things. This is exciting! Even though Christianity started with just a few people, it will eventually spread to the entire earth! Jesus confirms this in Matthew 24:14 - “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.”
So when it seems like no one around you is following God, or you are being rejected for the gospel, remember that God’s Kingdom starts small and then spreads like wildfire to cover the earth. His Kingdom is growing every day!
