God's Justice: Dies Irae, Dies Illa

“Behold, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.” -Isaiah 40:10

“I will execute great vengeance on them with wrathful rebukes. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon them.” -Ezekiel 25:17

One of the greatest characteristics of God is his great love and mercy. In fact, we’d have no chance of heaven if it weren’t for his love and mercy. It was this love and mercy that led him to sacrifice Jesus on the cross for our sake. It is this love and mercy that will cause him to come again and dwell with us forever.

But we cannot ignore that God is also a God of wrath. This wrath is equally as much a part of his character as his love and mercy. This is why Jesus had to die - to satisfy God’s wrath. This is why the Old Testament prophets speak so much of God’s judgment on wicked people. This is why there will be a final judgment against unbelievers, Satan, and Satan’s angels.

I don’t mean to scare you or make you pessimistic, but I want to make sure that here on iDevo we eventually touch on every aspect of who God is so that we can worship him more and more accurately. God’s wrathfulness should arouse a bit of fear and reverence in us, and it will ultimately lead us to be even more amazed by his astounding grace toward us.
