Keep Your Eyes on God: Depend on Him
Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard? The Lord is the eternal God, creator of the earth. He never gets weary or tired; his wisdom cannot be measured. (Isaiah 40:28)
Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
In our everyday relationships, extreme dependency is a liability. There is a negative connotation to the word “needy” when describing someone, because none of us can handle God’s job of supplying all of the needs of a person, whether those needs are emotional, physical, financial, etc. It is not surprising for a “needy” person to push away one s/he loves because the individual s/he is depending on, is limited. That individual will become exhausted, and the dependent person will ultimately be disappointed. We all fall short.
God, on the other hand, is not like man. He is fulfilled, and in Him we find everything we need. Everything. He wants for us to come to Him about everything in every situation, big or small, because 1) He loves us unconditionally and 2) He is inexhaustible. He is not only our provider; He is also the lover of our souls. He does not simply tolerate us; He desires us. We can be as needy as we want to with God because He does not grow weary and therefore does not get annoyed by our neediness, nor does He get tired of us as we depend on Him. It is with delight, not obligation, that He asks us to draw near to Him. We were made to have this kind of close connection with God, and attempting to replace Him with an imperfect human being as Our Supplier will result in failure.
Do not hesitate to go to the Good Father for anything and everything. He is jealous for your time, attention, devotion, and dependency. And we can rest in the sureness that He is able to handle our neediness with pleasure.
