The Life of Joseph: A Lesson In Favor

Genesis 41:38-39 Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is a divine spirit?” So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you are.

Have you ever done something and excelled at it beyond what you believed possible? Joseph was there, he knew nothing about running an entire county. His only job in life had been to tend to his master’s house as a slave and now the Pharaoh had decided to put him in charge. Talk about a jump from slave to jailed criminal to second most powerful man in Egypt.

The thing is Joseph’s character played an important role in getting him to this place but it was God’s favor on his life that played the most important part. God could have used a different person to interpret Pharaoh’s dream but he didn’t. He used Joseph because Joseph stayed true in his service to God and honored God with his life. This brought God’s favor on Joseph’s life and it completely changed his circumstances.

In the same way we too can have God’s favor in our lives. When we live a life that honors God it brings favor and good things can happen. We begin to excel compared to those around us, we can receive divine wisdom to help us overcome problem, or we can gain a good reputation with peers or even superiors. Now this does not mean we will never face challenges, hardships, or setbacks. It also does not mean that the favor is immediate or that we will get rich by honoring God. Simply that when we honor God with our lives it brings His favor on our life like it did for Joseph. God’s favor comes in many forms but ultimately we see it most as we look back and see His hand and favor upon our lives.
