Are You Planting Seeds?
Matthew 13:18-23 “Now listen to the explanation of the parable about the farmer planting seeds: The seed that fell on the footpath represents those who hear the message about the Kingdom and don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches away the seed that was planted in their hearts. The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word. The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced. The seed that fell on good soil represents those who truly hear and understand God’s word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!”
When Jesus told the story of the parable of the sower, he showed the four different types of people who receive the word of God. Those in whom the word of God has no effect. Those whom hear it and it only lasts for a brief moment. Those whom hear it and life eventually gets in the way. Finally those in whom the word of God takes root, flourishes and grows.
The thing is we are that sower. It is our job to plant the Word of God throughout the world not just in our words but also in our actions. We though are not the judge of the soil, our job is to share the Word of God regardless. This means that we do not get to pick and choose who is worthy of the Word and who is not. The truth is everyone is worthy to hear the Word. God did not send His Son just for some of us but for all of us. “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Yes, some people may choose to downright reject the Word, others may only hear it for a fleeting moment or get pulled away by life but remember it is not our place to judge the soil. Simply to be the light of Christ in a dark and dying world. Will you be a sower and plant seeds in the people you come in contact with?
