Are You Headed for Spiritual Poverty or Spiritual Wealth?
“A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest—
and poverty will come on you like a thief
and scarcity like an armed man.” -Proverbs 6:10-11
I heard a quote last week. It said, “You can't get much done in life if you only work on the days you feel good.” Laziness can be very detrimental to your spiritual life. I have found that when I think about reading the Bible, I sometimes really feel like sitting around and watching Netflix or playing video games or playing my instrument instead. Sometimes I am too lazy to share my faith. More often than those, though, I am too lazy to invest in people.
When we are too lazy to do what God has called us to do, we are headed for spiritual poverty. Train yourself to be active in your faith. Develop healthy habits of reading the Bible, praying, sharing your faith, and investing in the lives of people. When we do these things, we are headed for spiritual wealth. God has not called us to be lazy people - he has called us to be hard-working servants!
It may seem hard, at first, to completely change your life around if you are lazy (especially if you are too lazy to try to stop being lazy!), but it is well worth the effort. You will find that when you get up and act, you experience God in a way that is more real than ever. After all, when did the disciples experience great acts of God? It was when they were out doing things for Him!
If you are having trouble, pray this prayer: “God, I don’t have much will-power to do what I need to do. Fill me up with your Holy Spirit so that I have the strength to be your disciple. Help me to be a hard-working servant for you, and I pray that you would raise up other hard-working servants in this world. Along the way, let me experience you in a way that is more real than anything I’ve experienced. I love you, Lord. Amen.”
