God's Justice: He Holds the Scales
Proverbs 16:11
"A just balance and scales belong to the LORD; All the weights of the bag are His concern."
The world we live in is in the process of throwing off all standards to the point that even the lines on a ruler have lost meaning. I watched a video in which a 5’9’’ man went around a college campus asking the students what their response would be if he told them he was 6’5’’. I was shocked to watch them hem and haw. Many said that they would not contradict him, because it wasn’t their place. Others said that if he felt 6’5’’ in his heart, then that made him 6’5’’. In the world’s attempt avoid offending, the standard of this world shifts like sand in a windstorm.
God has a standard that cannot change, because the character of God does not change. The balance and scales of justice belong to the Lord. Even the weights in the bags sitting on the scale are not ours to judge. We cannot say that one issue is more important than another. That is God’s job.
God cares enough about us to call us out on our inconsistencies and weaknesses. He cared enough to give us his written standard to live by, and calls us to something higher than feeling good about ourselves. He calls us to holiness.
While I doubt a 5’9’’ man will come to you proclaiming he is 6’5’’ our friends and loved ones do come to us with questions and debates regarding the Word of God.
We do not want to offend others for the sake of being “right,” but how much more harm do we cause by watering down God’s standard?
When we waver on what the Word of God clearly states, we misrepresent our unchanging God.
